Leonard Reid House Move May 27, 2022August 25, 2023 The historic Leonard Reid house is now in its new location at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Orange Avenue after being moved 2.6 miles overnight from the Rosemary District to Newtown. Vice Mayor Kyle Scott Battie was on site from start to finish as were members of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition, Inc. Crews will continue to prepare the site and house for the SAACC, which will use the structure for its first cultural arts center. The historic house dates back to 1926 and is locally and nationally historically designated. The Leonard Reid house is named for the highly respected early pioneer who helped establish Sarasota’s first Black community, Overtown, now known as the Rosemary District.
